Visa information

Visas and New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA)

We enjoy welcoming visitors to New Zealand. To ensure you have an experience to remember, make sure you've done your homework and have everything sorted before you leave.

Before travelling to New Zealand, you need to make sure your passport is valid for at least three months longer than your expected departure date.

Most international visitors will also need either a visa or a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before arriving in New Zealand. If you are not sure whether you need a NZeTA or a visa, visit the New Zealand Immigration website. You should also be aware that that some countries you travel through to get to New Zealand may require transit visas.

You do NOT need a visa to visit New Zealand if you are:

  • A New Zealand or Australian citizen or resident, or
  • A UK citizen and/or passport holder (you can stay up to six months and will require a NZeTA), or
  • A citizen of a country which has a visa waiver agreement with New Zealand (you can stay up to three months and will require a NZeTA). Click here for a list of visa waiver countries and territories.

You do NOT need a NZeTA to visit New Zealand if you:

  • Have a valid visa for New Zealand - this can be a work, student, visitor, resident or permanent resident visa
  • Are travelling on an Australian passport, New Zealand passport or a foreign passport that has a New Zealand citizen endorsement
  • Are a member of, or someone associated with, a scientific programme or expedition under the Contracting Party to the Antarctic Treaty — you may need evidence to support this, or
  • Are a member of a visiting force, including one of its civilian employees, travelling in the ordinary course of your employment or duty — you may need evidence to support this.
